1 Corinthians 14:6-19

1 Corinthians 14:6-19

Review

  1. We are not to be ignorant of spiritual gifts.

  2. We all have a spiritual gift.

  3. The church is stronger and unique when we use our spiritual gifts.

  4. Spiritual gifts are not to be used solely in church services

  5. There are gifts that just some people have.

  6. There are gifts that are available to all of us.

  7. The Spirit determines who gets what gifts.

  8. The foundation of all relationships in the church is supposed to be love.

  9. There are two uses for the gift of tongues:
    • a personal prayer life that edifies the believer
    • a prophetic word that must be interpreted to build the church.

  10. The Spirit wants us all to have the gift of  prayer language.

  11. The Spirit wants us all to be used in prophesy to build others up

  12. Two opposing views of tongues in the church world today that at extremes say
    • Tongues are for a past time.
    • Tongues is a dominate gift and should be sought in all church services.

Paul has just stated that he wants us all to speak in tongues. Why? It edifies us!

Paul then stated that even more he wants us to prophesy.
Why? It builds up the church.

1 Corinthians 14:6

Paul’s main emphasis in the next passages goes to the practical good of the gift

The prayer language of tongues does not benefit those who hear it, just the person of prayer.

He then emphasizes the gifts that build up the body with clearly understandable words that are filled with revelation, knowledge, prophecy, and teaching

If you desire tongues pray that you may interpret in the church. Otherwise, the spirit prays but the mind is unfruitful.

What shall we do? Should we dismiss praying with the Spirit? By no means.

I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also.
I will sing with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.

Building others up is the whole purpose of spiritual gifts.

In verse 18 Paul gives a word to show his support for praying in the Spirit. “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.”

In verse 19 he gets right in the face of traditional Pentecostals,
“In church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct, than 10,000 words in tongues.”

Paul is being corrective to abuse, but he is being balanced in truth
