The Holy Spirit Part 1

John 16:5–15

Jesus declared that He was going to send the Helper who is the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit comes to convict. There are three parts to this process:

1. Reprove or Admonish

  • The Spirit, by the Word and conscience, reproves.
  • Ministers admonish by office, and by them the Spirit reproves.
  • Our testimonies are used by the Spirit to reprove.

2. Convince

Note, convincing work is the Spirit’s work. He can do it effectually; no one else can. We can open the discussion, but it is only the Spirit who can open the heart.

3. Comfort – the Spirit is the Comforter

The Spirit first admonishes us, then He convinces us, and then He reveals the answer. The answer is Jesus.

However, the Comforter does not come for a moment; the Holy Spirit has an ongoing work in our lives.

Three Baptisms

Matthew 28:18–20

Baptism One – Baptism in Water

When a person has come to Christ, the call of the church and the obedient response of the believer is to follow the Lord in water baptism. We believe a spiritual work is done in this physical act.

In this baptism, the minister baptizes the new believer.

1 Corinthians 12:12–13

Galatians 3:25–29

Baptism TwoBaptism into the Body of Christ

The Holy Spirit convicts us and we are drawn to a decision.

When we open our hearts by believing that Jesus is risen, and accept Jesus as Lord, the Spirit baptizes us into the Body of Christ.

Matthew 3:11

Mark 1:7–8

Luke 3:16

John 1:33–34

Baptism Three – Baptism in the Holy Spirit

This declaration is made in all four gospels.

The purpose of this baptism is power and fire.

Who was this gift promised to?

Luke 10:20

To men and women who had walked in close communion with Jesus and whose names were already in the Book of Life.

The emphasis in Acts 1 was not on regeneration, but on power.

In this baptism, Jesus is the baptizer and we are baptized in the Holy Spirit.
