1 Corinthians 14:20-25

1 Corinthians 14:19-25
At first reading, this passage seems to implode logically on itself.

All Paul says in Chapter 14 for the church is that everything centers on understanding.

1 Corinthians 14:21-25

Tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers.
Prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.

Isn’t that just the opposite of what Paul has been saying? NO!

Remember what happened on the day of Pentecost?
They spoke in tongues and all the people heard them in their own language glorifying God.

That’s the sign for the unbeliever. Believers don’t need that to happen.

A prophetic word of encouragement is not so powerful for the unbeliever as it is for the believer who receives it in faith.

This isn’t just someone speaking in tongues. Paul makes that clear in the next verse.

1 Corinthians 14:23

If we all gathered around the altar and prayed in tongues - no problem

But if an unsaved person came in, Paul says they are going to think you are crazy.

If you spoke their native language and they knew you didn’t know it, and you glorified God, that becomes a sign.

1 Corinthians 14:24-25
