Victory Over Generational Curses
Pastor Clark Pfaff

Key Point: The definition of a generational curse

“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands. (Exodus 20:4-6, NLT)

Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin. (Deuteronomy 24:16, NIV)

“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! (Deuteronomy 30:19, NLT)

Key Point: The cure for the sins you inherited

The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them. (Ezekiel 18:20, NIV)

a. Repent of your sins.

…if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.
(2 Chronicles 7:14, NLT)

b. Commit your life to Jesus.

1 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.
(Romans 8:1-2, NLT)

c. Receive God’s acceptance

Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new.
(2 Corinthians 5:17, CEV)

d. Live in obedience.

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. (2 Timothy 3:16, NLT)

Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.
(Romans 8:5-6, NLT)

Key Point: The cure for sins committed against you

In Psalm 9 we read this about how God cares for you: The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. (Psalm 9:9, NIV)

Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new.
(2 Corinthians 5:17, CEV)
