How To Pray

James 5:16-18

Christians are not opposed to prayer, however, think about your prayer life. What does it look like?

What I just described is the prayer of the

Elijah’s prayer was fervent. Fervent prayer is the prayer of the                      ____________________.

Desperate prayer is                            by passion, time, consistency, pleading and faith.

Desperate prayer is                       in a realization that things must change.

Desperate prayer sees                  as the only answer to the problem.

When the Northern Kingdom was faltering, Elijah, the prophet of God, _______________________.

For three and a half years it did not rain.

God showed that He was more powerful than Asherah and Baal.

You can read the whole story in 1Kings 17 and 18.

  • The point of the book of James is that Elijah was a            just like us.
  • Elijah prayed                         and                             for help.
  • God struck at the                            of the matter.

The prayer life of the desperate is                                than the prayer life of the comfortable, or worse the surrendered.

The Church has the                           to pray and see the results of Elijah in our lives and our day.

The victory has been won, but                                  must be applied.

In Jesus’ time on earth the disciples were with Jesus when He did great things.

What they asked Him was, “Teach us how to pray.”

You won’t learn transforming prayer in a sermon, but you can get a framework and begin.

Tools to develop prayer:

  • Develop a prayer list.
  • Look for prayers in the Bible.Ephesians 1:17 - A Spirit of wisdom, revelation and knowledge
  • The Lord’s prayer

Here is a great pattern to start:

  • Matthew 6:9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.”

Give thanks to God for who He is and what He has done.

  • Matthew 6:10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

This is submission of your will to His.

  • Matthew 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread,

This is recognition of God’s provision in our lives

  • Matthew 6:12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

This is about how we see people and how we see ourselves.

  • Matthew 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

This is about participating in the spiritual battle we are in.

When the Church regains its ability to tarry before God, the Church will regain its ability to walk in God's power.
