1 Corinthians 12:4-11

1 Corinthians 12:4-11

The role of the Holy Spirit is of highest importance to our lives and to the work of the Kingdom of God in the church and the world.

1 Corinthians 12-14 is all about the Holy Spirit working in our lives and in the church.

1 Corinthians 12:8-10 is known as the primary scripture on gifts.

There are other passages that list gifts.
1 Corinthians 12:27–28
Ephesians 4:11–12
Romans 12:3–8
1 Corinthians 12:8-10

Two trains of thought on this passage.

  1. There are nine gifts as listed in 1 Corinthians 12 and all the others lists in some way fit into those nine.

  2. Another thought is that 1 Corinthians 12 is neither exhaustive or even carefully worked out.

It is a list that represents the varieties of ways that the Holy Spirit can manifest Himself through the lives of believers.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11

There are a variety of gifts.

  • They come from the same Lord

  • There are varieties of service - what brings passion and excitement to one may not to another.

There is a difference between Christian responsibility and passionate gifting.

  •  There are varieties of activities.

God empowers the gifts.

In this case the Corinthians were highlighting in tongues as the highest gifting.

Everyone gets a gift.

Gifting is not a sign of the super spiritual, but of the Christian.

Gifts are given for the common good.

Gifts need to recognized, even as they are judged.

The Spirit apportions them as He will.

Romans 12:4-8

The Spirit is the master of supply and demand. He knows the need and supplies the gifts.
