THE DIVINE NATURE

2 Peter 1:3–8 (ESV)

We may become partakers in the divine nature; we don’t have the divine nature.

The church from its earliest days until now has battled with false doctrine.

One of the main battles of the early church was with Gnostics. These teachers taught only the spirit could be good and matter was evil.

Peter’s answer to this was that we should hold fast to faith and, in fact, be growing in grace.

What is your goal this year in faith? Do you have one?

Peter tells us what our goal should be in 2 Peter 1:3-8.

Our goal should be to grow in our participation with the divine nature.

The word of knowledge in the New Testament is gnosis. This means understanding something. The word used here has a prefix. Epignosis. Epi means toward or in the direction of.

What we learn is that godliness comes to those who, through the growing knowledge of Jesus, find the living example of His glory and excellence.

This calls for intent and effort.

How does that happen? He has given us promises.

  • Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy.

  • As you measure it out, it will be measured to you.

  • Give and it shall be given unto you.

1 John 1:9 (ESV)

Every promise is founded in faith.
