Sermon Outline

Key Point: The Anchor of Hope

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.(Hebrews 6:19, NIV)

God’s Oath

Since there was no one greater to swear by, God took an oath in his own name…(Hebrews 6:13, NIV)

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath…(Hebrews 6:17, ESV)

God’s Character

…it is impossible for God to lie… (Hebrews 6:18, ESV)

Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. (Hebrews 11:19, NLT)

God’s Son

19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 6:19-20, ESV)

a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.Hebrews 6:20b, ESV)

Key Point: The Greatest High Priest and King

a. He is a Priest and a King

13 He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe, and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar. 14 For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. 15 And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, 16 one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. (Hebrews 7:13-16, NIV)

b. His Priesthood is Permanent.

21 but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: ‘You are a priest forever.’” 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood.(Hebrews 7:21, 24, NIV)

But now we have confidence in a better hope, through which we draw near to God.Hebrews 7:19b, NIV)

c. He Intercedes Forever.

25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. (Hebrews 7:25, NIV)

d. He is Perfect.

26 Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. (Hebrews 7:26-27, NIV)
