The Holy Spirit in the Church

2 Timothy 3:16-17

When the topic of the Holy Spirit comes up, many people get out their magic marker.

Remember, it says “All Scripture.”

“Church” means the body of Christ in submission to God.

The truth about the Holy Spirit can be tough because many of us come from different backgrounds.

Where do we find the truth? Is all scripture good for you?

1 Corinthians 14:1-4

Earnestly desire spiritual gifts. These gifts will strengthen the Church.

  1. Especially desire the gift of prophesy.
  • The one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.
  • The Church is where people earnestly desire the gift that builds others up.
  • The members are praying, hoping, and earnestly desiring to be this kind of gift to others.
  • They aren’t making things up, but they are listening with their spirit.
  • They earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.
  • Earnestly desire is to be aware of this gift. The gift of prophecy is for everyone.
  • God will use us to build, encourage, and console others.
  1. Earnestly desire to pray in tongues.1Corinthians 14:2-5
  • The Spirit puts an order of importance on the gifts.
  • The one who speaks in a tongue builds himself up.
  • This place in scripture is talking about the personal prayer of the believer.
  • “I want you all to speak in tongues.”

1 Corinthians 14:23

Some people mark out verse 23.  Some mark out verse 5.

What is the challenge of the Word?   It is to earnestly desire the spiritual gifts. Why? These two gifts build up others and build us up.

Why wouldn’t we want that?
