Sermon Outline

Colossians 2:6-7

The “Yes and No” of Discipleship

What does discipleship mean?

  • Education – What you learn … but not just your knowledge
  • Spiritual Formation – What you love …but not just your passions
  • Action – What you do … but not just your good works
  • Evangelism – What you share … but not just your words
  • Discipleship is a holistic effort to become like Jesus.

Discipleship Identity

  • Discipleship is more about a transformed identity into Christ than it is about conforming how you think, talk, act, dress or spend your time and resources.
  • 1 Corinthians 3:4-5;1 Corinthians 11:1

Discipleship Purpose

  • Colossians 1:28; Ephesians 4:15b
  • There are four key words in our passage today that help guide us:
  1. Received – We are saved by grace through faith.
  2. Rooted – This is about depth, strength, foundation and nourishment.
  3. Built up – This is the framework, shape and security of our lives.
  4. Established – This is about surety and truth.
    Psalm 93:2

Discipleship Practices

  • The process of discipleship is practiced.
  • There are rhythms in which we are to live our lives as disciples:
  • Scripture reading/daily devotions
  • Prayer
  • Repentance
  • Serving
  • Sacrificial generosity
  • Sharing your story
  • Celebration & worship

Rooted is a 10-week, community-based discipleship experience.
