Sermon Outline

Genesis 1:27-28

How we see ourselves can be influenced by the events of our lives.

Extremes can lead to harmful conclusions.

Who am I? What am I?  God paints a picture.

You are a divine creation of God and of great value. Never forget these two truths:

  1. Everyone else is also a divine creation.
  2. There is more to the story.

Genesis 1:27; Genesis 2:7

As humans, we are created beings.  We are a unique kind of creation that will continue to exist.

1 Thessalonians 5:23

  • Body – The physical being
  • Soul – The personality, emotions, essence or life
  • Spirit – Seat of our nature or character

The spirit of man is what is moved on by the Holy Spirit when we become a Christian. The spirit of man allows us to become connected with the Spirit of God.

The connection with God will redefine our character. All these parts are what makes us human.

Big Question:  Why do we pay for Adam & Eve’s sin?

What died that day? That separation was the Spirit of God from the spirit of man.

At creation, God built into all nature the miraculous power to recreate.  It is in all living things. Living things can only recreate their own kind.

After the fall, what could Adam and Eve create?  They could only create their own kind, which are disconnected spirits or human beings on their own.

We become the creation of God at conception.  We come into being as humans. The trouble is our condition as disconnected spirits. What does this do to man?

Genesis 8:20-21; Jeremiah 17:9-10

This is the human condition.  We don’t have a connection with the Holy Spirit of God to direct us.

Matthew 5:3

We have to stop seeing ourselves as we think we are, good or bad. This is where we are.  We have to maximize the break.

Let’s think closely about Jesus and our condition:

  • We are fully human and broken.
  • Jesus is fully human, but born by the will of the Father. He is another kind. He’s not broken or disconnected. Through Him, we can be born again.

Two things to do:

  1. Open your heart to Him.
  2. Begin to maximize the break. Center your life and thinking on Him.
