Proverbs lesson one

 

Proverbs 1:1–7 (ESV)

Proverbs teaches us how to master living, how to see and do things with excellence.


Authorship
The book of Proverbs has been described as a collection of collections.

Chapters 1-9 are seen as a preface or introduction to the concept of wisdom.

The main author is Solomon.
He authored three books: Ecclesiastes, Proverbs, and Song of Solomon.


Purpose
The goal of Bible study is always wisdom

Wisdom is about how to act

  • Practical wisdom for living is the central theme.
    Knowledge is knowing: wisdom is applying knowledge.

  • The beginning of wisdom is fear of God

  • To give wisdom to the young and lacking

  • To instruct the wise to be wiser still

How to view Proverbs:

  1. Proverbs give good advice.

  2. Proverbs are not necessarily promises.  

  3. Proverbs show how the kingdom of God works.

  4. Proverbs show how the kingdom of the world works

  5. Proverbs reveal wisdom and foolishness.

  6. Proverbs, at times, give us promises.


The Proverbs work like rain, for the righteous and the unrighteous

Approach Proverbs as a mentor to your life and you will grow brighter and brighter
