The First Battle

Joshua 6:1-5

We now turn to strongholds in our lives that still exist.

Joshua and Israel came prepared for the Promised Land, but there were still enemies there. They were warned to not dwell with them, for these people will corrupt the people of Israel, and keep them from the full fruit of the Promised Land.

They were physical strongholds.

We have strongholds in our lives that have been there for a lifetime and need purged from our lives.

To overcome lifetime strongholds, you have to go looking for them.

This is almost always our experience when we see the promises of God and our present circumstances: We have a hard time seeing how we can win.

Joshua received a ridiculous strategy.

The Lord’s plan may not make sense to us because we are thinking with the knowledge of our strength instead of the awareness of God’s power.

1 Corinthians 13:12

Here is the principle for today: Do it God’s way.

Spiritual vision:

  1. Spiritual vision comes from being in the presence of God.
  2. Spiritual vision comes when we submit to God’s purpose.
  3. Spiritual vision comes as we believe what God says.

When you get a good look at God’s power, it puts your battle in perspective.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Many times, God’s plan doesn’t seem active enough for us, or we don’t trust it.  So, we try to do it on our own.

Today, the call is to prayer.

The physical strategy is not the key to victory; an obedience strategy is!

Proverbs 18:21

They shouted a shout of victory after they obeyed and before the walls fell.

God directed them first to Jericho. They could have gone other directions, but God knew what should be first.

What would God direct you to today?  Most likely, it will be something you have struggled with for a long time that is keeping you out of the Promised Land.
