Lesson Four - Wisdom: The Way of Favor

Proverbs 2:6
Wisdom is knowing how to act.
God gives wisdom to all who seek it

Proverbs 2:1-5
Wisdom allows us to be in a right relationship with God.

Two clear commandments in this passage:
1. Receive His words

  • Storing them in your heart
  • Making your ear attentive

2. Pray for wisdom

  • Call out for insight
  • Raise your voice for understanding

As you seek wisdom, God will extend His favor and His revelation

What do God’s favor and revelation look like?

Proverbs 2:7-8
God shields, guards, and watches over us.

Our biggest heartaches come from two sources:
We go against God’s wisdom in our actions.
We fail to seek God’s wisdom in our decisions.

Proverbs 2:9
God gives us understanding of righteousness, justice, equity, and every good path.

If we will know His Word and seek His will, He will reveal His way

Many times we act in the wisdom of the world or we fail to listen for God’s voice of direction.

The more you know the Word the easier it becomes to hear His voice of direction.

Proverbs 2:10-13
All through the rest of Chapter 2 God promises that wisdom will deliver us from ways that will destroy us.

In Chapter 3, He calls us not to forget the benefits of wisdom: prolonged life, prosperity, and a good name.

Proverbs 3:4 The favor of God.

Proverbs 3:5-8
Don’t go your own way or be wise in your own eyes.
God will make your paths straight. He will refresh your life.

As well-known as these verses are, most neglect the wisdom of the next verses. We shout and sing about verses 5-8 and we forget verses 9-10. Read them at home.

Chapter 8 continues the same theme: wisdom is calling.
Proverbs 8:5-11

Last week:
The simple are inexperienced and easily fooled.
The fool hates knowledge.
The writer appeals to both to come and learn from the mouth of God’s wisdom.

This wisdom is better than silver, gold, and jewels. Nothing we desire can compare to wisdom.

This is an appeal to turn our ear to learning. Proverbs 8:13
The enemies of wisdom: pride, arrogance, loving evil, perverted speech.

Proverbs 8:17

Proverbs 8:32-36
Again He says, “hear, listen, and find” and you will walk in the favor of the Lord.
Hear the instruction, watching daily at my gates and waiting beside my doors.

When we fail to do that, who do we hurt? Ourselves.
We find wisdom in His Word and in prayer
