Sermon Outline

1 Chronicles 29:10-18

First things first: God owns everything.

If that’s really true, it also implies something else: we own nothing.

Deuteronomy 8:17-18

Stewardship is the act of watching, overseeing, or managing something on behalf of the actual owner of that thing.

Stewarding resources for someone else means using those resources in the same way the owner would if the owner were present.

Finances and Possessions

Malachi 3:6-12

2 Corinthians 9:6-7

How would God want you to use His money?

The greatest antidote to materialism is generosity.

Proper understanding of stewardship should disconnect you from your possessions and make it easier to help those in need.

Talents, skills, and abilities

Not only did God give you your abilities, those abilities still belong to Him.

As a steward of my talent or ability, am I using it in the same way that the Owner, God, would use it?

Time

You really don’t know how much time you have.

James 4:14

Our time is one of the greatest gifts we have from God, but it is definitely limited.

Ephesians 5:15-16

Are you spending your time wisely or unwisely? How would God spend your time?

Why do you have what you have?

1 Peter 4:10

Use what you have been given to serve others.

Not only do the resources we have not belong to us, but they are just various forms of God’s grace: things we get but we don’t deserve.

“Owners have rights. Stewards have responsibilities.” – Dr. Bill Peel

God is a rewarder of good stewards.
