Sermon Outline

Ruth 1:15-18

The books of Ruth and Esther are the only two books in the Bible named after women. Ruth was not a Jewish woman, but a Moabite. Like the Christmas story, her story is tied to Bethlehem.

One of the responsibilities of the believer is to hand faith to the next generation.

In this story, there is a drought in Bethlehem. There was a family whose names were Elimelech and Naomi, and their two sons Mahlon and Chilion.

It is important to know the meaning of their names:

  • Elimelech – My God is King
  • Naomi – Pleasant
  • Mahlon – Unhealthy
  • Chilion - Puny

Genesis 19:37-38

Bethlehem means “house of bread.” According to the Psalmist, “Moab is the washbasin.” They ran to God’s washbasin or, some say, trash bin.

This is a lesson for us. When we run from God’s plan and try to find life outside of it, we find trouble. When we return to God and His plan, we find blessing.

Ruth 1:19b-21

We see in Ruth the heart of a true convert to faith.
