Assignment: Share your salvation story with someone this week.

1 Samuel 18:1-2

After David defeated Goliath, everything turned for the good in David’s life.

Wisely” was the common refrain of David’s life during this time. Wisdom from God means doing the right thing.

The cry was, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”

David kept behaving wisely. He kept doing the right things, and he didn’t get bitter.

David wondered, but he stayed loyal.

In mankind, jealousy is a bitter seed in the heart.

The best thing to do when feeling jealous of someone is to celebrate them with everyone else.

David had been anointed king, but he wouldn’t fight for the position.

It is not good to be opposed to God’s plans.

David must have felt that the blessing of God had departed from him.

There were many things that happened during this time that are found in Chapters 19-32 of 1 Samuel.

Four Lessons for Today

  1. During this time, David made certain covenants and promises to both Jonathan and Saul. When he became king, he remembered his promises and kept them.
    • Our covenants pre-make decisions for our future. This is good.

  1. David showed a heart of loyalty.

  1. David saved Keilah.
    • When people do good to you, you should have a natural sense of loyalty to that person.
    • You can be really good to some people, and they will still
turn on you for their own good.
    • Keep doing good.

  1. Don’t try to be God if you want God to fight for you.

David, who was hunted and exiled said “NO” to killing Saul. Why?

You don’t touch God’s anointed.

David knew that to touch the anointed was to touch what God had blessed.

The battle would have to be in God’s hands.

If you seem stuck in the wilderness, keep leaning into God’s wisdom.

Keep doing the right thing, the biblical thing!

The lesson of the wilderness is to be prepared for the days of triumph.
