Week 1 - Hell

Genesis 2:4 -7

The Bible presents man as a living being made up of body, soul, and spirit.

We will exist forever; eternity awaits us after this life.

Hebrews 9:27

When this flesh dies our essence will go before God for judgement
This judgement is pass/fail

John 3:36

Jesus taught that there is only one way to Heaven and that is by faith in Him

Some people who call themselves Christians have different opinions about what happens after judgement.

Three things are taught:

  1. Annihilation

  2. Universalism

  3. We exist in either Heaven or Hell

So what does the Bible say and, especially, what does Jesus teach?

13% of the 1850 verses in the New Testament that record the words of Jesus deal with the subject of eternal judgement and Hell.

Matthew 25:46

In this story Jesus teaches that Heaven is real, and that Hell is equally as real. They are both realities.

Mark 9:47-48

Jesus describes Hell in the worst possible terms.

Romans 7:7

The law is given to us clearly and simply to know our condition.

The law of God reveals that we are all sinners; there is none good.

Why should we talk about Hell?

  • To have a greater appreciation of our own salvation and how much we have been spared.

  • To cause us to have a greater desire to witness.

  • To help us walk in holiness by fearing the Lord.

Why should we worry? We are under grace.

Matthew 7:21-23

Who are these people cast into darkness?

People who call themselves Christians but don’t do what He says. This could be church-going people.

You will exist, your children will exist, and your friends and family will exist for eternity someplace.
